Shepherd's purse is a relatively easy crop to grow and does not require extensive special care. Shepherd's purse is primarily sown in the fall (early September), and broadcasting the seeds and lightly covering them with soil is key.
Fall Sowing (Recommended): The most suitable time is early September. Sowing at this time allows for harvesting from late fall of that year, and remaining seedlings can overwinter for harvesting again in the spring of the following year.
Spring Sowing: If the goal is to harvest in spring, sowing should be done between mid-to-late February. If sowing is delayed, flower stalks may rise in warm weather, making it difficult to use as a spring namul.
- Preparing the Field: Apply basal fertilizer to the field to be sown and prepare the soil. Well-drained, fertile soil with good sunlight is ideal.
- Seed Preparation: Since shepherd's purse seeds are very small, it is good to mix about 50% sand with them and broadcast them to prevent them from being sown too closely together.
- Sowing: Broadcast the seeds evenly in the prepared field using the broadcasting method.

Covering and Watering: After sowing the seeds, gently rake the soil surface to ensure the seeds are lightly in contact with the soil. Be careful not to bury them too deeply, as this can hinder germination. After sowing, use a sprinkler or similar method to gently water and maintain soil moisture. Germination usually takes about 1-2 weeks if appropriate temperature and moisture conditions are maintained.
Top Dressing: Since its growth period is short and nutrient requirements are low, it can be managed primarily with basal fertilizer. However, to harvest early in spring, it is advantageous to apply top dressing sooner.
Harvest: For fall sowing, harvesting can be done from mid-November until early April of the following year.
